Golf Clothing – Keeping Comfortable and Professional
What you wear while playing a game of golf depends in large part on where you are playing and who you are playing with. While a t-shirt and a pair of cutoffs might be ideal for a casual game with your buddies at the local public course, you should have an idea of proper golf clothing to wear if you are playing with co-workers or your boss at the country club.
Most clubs have some pretty fixed dress codes for what can be worn on the course. T-shirts are definitely out, which is one of the primary reasons behind the invention of the polo shirt. This type of shirt, which can be a comfortable as a t-shirt, has a collar. Collars are required at most private courses, so pick a good name-brand collared shirt at part of your wardrobe.
Shorts can be acceptable golf clothing, but they must be suitable for the course. You don't want cut-off jeans, tennis shorts, or any shorts that are too short or too tight. Shorts should come down to just above your knee to be deemed acceptable, and should be tailored and have belt loops. Another must-have at the country club is pants or shorts with belt loops, and a nice leather belt.
Pants can be casual, like khakis, but should never be denim. Denim is not allowed on most country club courses or in the clubhouse, should you want to accept an invitation for that after-game cocktail. Another rule about golf clothing is that slacks with cuffs should be avoided, because sand can get inside them. If you are wearing long pants, the etiquette rule is that your socks should match your pants. If you are wearing shorts, it would be best if you have light-colored shoes and light-colored socks. If you have to wear black shoes with shorts, the fashion rule is to wear black socks, as well. It doesn't look all that good, but it looks better than white socks with black shoes.
If you are playing with work associates or with your boss, keep the bright colors to a minimum, maybe just one piece of colorful attire. No matter who you are golfing with, a major golf clothing rule is that if you are wearing plaid, you should stick to one plaid only, and choose a color in the plaid to wear as the other piece.
Proper golf shoes are a must. There are no substitutes for regulation shoes, so don't expect to get away with tennis shoes. Most country clubs no longer allow metal spikes, so make sure you have up to date footwear with soft spikes or the spike in the tread design. You should wear your street shoes into the clubhouse and change into your golf shoes in the locker room before you go out to play.
Hats are always a good idea when choosing your golf clothing. They keep your eyes shaded and the sun out of your face. You can wear almost any type of hat, but a pristine ball cap or straw golf hat are good choices and are great for keeping cool.
